Selling artwork

Today was the Charity Market Day supporting Heads Up, a charity organisation in Canberra that supports women with hair loss through things like chemo, medical conditions etc.

It was organised by one of my fabulous pink sisters, Lizzi Beth Lefevre. She is a bit of a dynamo. On the news this week being interviewed about a new ACT bill to support fertility treatment for younger women going through cancer treatment. I met Tara Cheyne today as well, the local member who sponsored the bill. Congratulations to everyone involved in the passing of the bill.

Anyway, this post is about selling artwork. My art is very personal. It is part of me, and when I paint there is a lot of my passion, energy and heart that goes into my creation.

I know that my artwork is not to everybody's taste. It is not traditional, it is not expected. Some people struggle with my work because they need to see an absolute thing, rather than listen to their emotional reaction. Or maybe it is because they are not comfortable having a reaction like that to a painting?

I love when somebody really connects with one of my pieces. You can see their response. It is almost magnetic. It gives me tingles when that happens and it is one of the things that inspires me to paint.

The piece sold today is titled Heal. It is designed to provide positive energy flow, and remind you of change, growth and regeneration.

There is a lot of argument around pricing of art and creative services. There is a balance, that is extremely difficult to reach, between knowing your value and worth, meeting the market, covering material costs (time is not ever going to be covered), having some income, and maintaining accessibility for everyday people. I try hard to keep this balance.

When you look at pricing for an original artwork, please consider all of those factors vs a mass produced print on cheap balsa.
