Our Why

I am a disabled woman, cancer survivor, and late diagnosed neurodivergent who has engaged with a wide variety of therapeutic practices in order to support my physical, mental and spiritual health and well-being.

Growing up, I always felt different, like an outsider trying to fit into spaces that didn’t seem made for me.

As a child, I was curious, creative, and always asking questions, but the world around me constantly told me to be quieter, smaller, less "me."

It wasn't until much later in life, after navigating the challenges of being a multiply disabled woman with autism, ADHD, and autoimmune conditions, that I began to understand why I felt that way. I spent years masking who I was, pushing myself to meet the expectations of others, and it took a toll on my mental and physical health.

My journey has been one of breaking free from those constraints and reclaiming my true self, not only for me but for my neurodivergent children. I now understand how much damage can be done when people are forced to hide parts of themselves to fit into a "normal" that doesn’t exist.

As an individual who was often labelled "difficult" and "complex" (as were my children), I often struggled to find services that I connected with and felt that I was truly getting benefit from.  I saw the same things happening with my children.

In seeking services for myself and my children I have found that many therapies are based on neuronormative processes, behaviours and practices. At best these practices were unhelpful and at worst, they were traumatic.

This is why I started Create Your Space With Shara—to provide a safe, supportive space for others like me, who have been misunderstood by traditional therapies. My work is deeply personal, fueled by my lived experience and the desire to help others embrace their authenticity and find healing through creative expression.
